How to read your tyre size.
Your tyre's sidewall holds the exact size your car needs. Learn what each number means, then use our tyre finder to get the right fit.
Look on the sidewall
Near the rim you'll see a code like this. That single line tells you width, profile, construction, rim size, load capacity and speed rating.

What each part means
- 205
Width
The tyre's width in millimetres from sidewall to sidewall. Wider tyres usually mean more road contact.
- 55
Profile (aspect ratio)
Sidewall height as a percentage of the width. A lower number is a shorter sidewall (often sportier); a higher number is taller and usually more comfortable.
- R16
Construction & rim
"R" means radial construction (almost all modern car tyres). "16" is the wheel rim diameter in inches, which must match your wheels.
- 91
Load index
A code for the maximum weight each tyre can safely carry. Don't fit a lower load index than your vehicle requires.
- V
Speed rating
The maximum sustained speed the tyre is designed for (for example H, V, W). Match or exceed your car's specification.
